Rusty teams? - Lubricate your team!

In conversations with entrepreneurs and managers these days, we keep hearing about problems with employees. For many, the regular, sometimes already above-average workload of everyday life is now starting again after a longer coronavirus break with short-time working. But not without problems for everyone.

One restaurateur says: "My staff have not yet got used to the pace they had before the shutdown. There are more wrong orders and excess routes because not everything has been thought of. Everything is moving far too slowly".

We hear from an entrepreneur: "Employees are coming together again, finally back in the office. But some teams are very heterogeneous - while many are looking forward to seeing their colleagues, others wish they could go back to working from home. This is also causing friction in the team".

And another manager tells us: "Motivation and willingness to perform have suffered in recent months. The pay came anyway thanks to short-time working compensation. And now working full-time again is causing a lot of problems, especially on these beautiful summer days".

Swiss (Tagesanzeiger of 22.7.) doesn't have it easy either: flight attendants don't show up for work without signing off, or are signing off sick in higher numbers. ... Scheduling difficulties due to side jobs?

Rusty teams, or sand in the gears. Change is often difficult for us humans. Once we have finally got used to and adapted to new circumstances, they change again. Adapting again is exhausting and it is unpleasantly tedious to realign ourselves again. Deeply human, without bad intentions. But it is very difficult for companies, because market opportunities often have to be seized quickly and at the right time. This requires agile teams and employees.

What are the current team topics in your company?

A tour operator friend of mine, the Chairman of the Board of Directors, recently told me that they had held a team event day for their employees and that it had made a big difference. The team had quickly come together again and, together with the management, they had been able to refocus on their mission statement, vision and business processes. That really created added value, he told me.
